The Endless Column as an expression of Brancusi aspiration towards God

coloana_infinituluiThe main artistic work of Constantin Brancusi – the Endless Column is one of the most amazing sculptures from the last century. Austere and perfectly balanced transmits clearly its spiritual message as told by the sculptor himself:

“The reality embodied by the Column – together with my other two signs in stone – is the impetus, the awareness of the wedding with the endless universe which we celebrate and the longing for the absolute which enlivens heroes.”

“This is the message of my Column, watched by the Table of Silence and Kissing Gate … to burn like a flame … to get transformed in lightening in order to unite the sky with the earth.”

“Doesn’t its inner rhythm from one clepsydra to the next reveal the countless pulsations of the universes that ceaselessly expand and contract?” “I am no longer of this world; I am far from myself, separated from my own body. I find myself among essential things.”

BrancusiBrancusi inspiration was first of all a spiritual one

The brilliant artistic inspiration of Brancusi was first of all a spiritual one. He said: “Contemplate my works until you see them. The ones close to God saw them.”

For Brancusi the eternity was contained within the moment of the now: “I don’t wish to be in fashion. All that is in fashion then disappears together with the fashion……. On the contrary, it doesn’t matter if your work is disputed in the present because, when it will finally be understood, it will exist for eternity.”

The famous Brancusi fully embraced his divine artistic gift and destiny: “That which I do today was given to me to do as I came into this world with a mission.”

The artistic shapes of his work represented for him only temporary means to reach the eternal essence: "That which is real is not the outer form but the essence of things".

We can draw the conclusion the artistic work of the great Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi is representative for the divine initiatic art.

Data about the Endless Column

The original Romanian names of this masterpiece are “Coloana Infinitului” which could be translated “The Column of the Infinite” and “Coloana Recunostinetei Fara Sfarsit” literally translated “The Column of Endless Gratitude” shortly put as “The Endless Column”.

It has 29.35 meters in height and was presented to the public first time on 27th Oct 1938. It is a monumental sculpture of Constantin Brancusi and belongs to the monumental trilogy from Targu Jiu, Romania – trilogy consisting of: The Endless Column, Kissing Gate and the Table of Silence.

It is composed of 15 octahedral modules and one half of a module at the lower and upper extremities. Brancusi called the modules of the Endless Column “beads”.

The energy of this shape radiated from the facets of the Endless Column was detected by measurement up to 200 meters around.

After Brancusi death his works were measured and weighted with accuracy. The researchers’ conclusion was that they are based on the proportion of the golden number.

fig1 - CopyThe Endless Column from Targu Jiu, Romania has 29.330 meters in height and weights 29,173 kg. It is built from irony alloy after the following formula 1/2 + 15 + 1/2 and after “the law of esthetic harmony” discovered and perfected by Brancusi: 1 – 2 – 4, in which 1= 45 cm (the size of the small edge of pyramid triangle assembled in a square), 2= 90 cm (the size of the big edge of pyramid triangle assembled in a square) and 4= 180 cm (the height of the pyramid cone). The pyramid cones, empty inside, are fixed vertically on a central steel core with a square section that is uniform on the entire height of the Endless Column. We can say that this work of the great artist Brancusi is characterized by rigor.

The outer part of the Endless Column was cleaned by a treatment with special sand and then two layers of metallic dust zinc and copper were pulverized at a higher temperature.  These operations were done in order for the Endless Column to resist to strong winds.

Pythagoras teachings in the Endless Column

250px-Romania_20060512_-_Tirgu_Jiu_-_Coloana_fara_sfarsitThe Endless Column contains 512 Golden Triangles, which means 8 x 8 x 8 Golden Triangles. In fact 83; that is a Golden Cube!

Egyptians called the Golden Triangle the Sacred Triangle.

The esthetic harmony of the Endless Column is described by the formula (2a): (4a): (8a) in which a= 22.5 cm. Its suppleness comes from the application of the following formula: 1/2 + 15 + 1/2.

“The brilliant simplicity in art is generally a solved complexity.” – Constantin Brancusi

Every moment the sacredness is poured on the banks of Jiu River through the Endless Column; an immense yet silent sacredness.

“This is the message of my Column, watched by the Table of Silence and the Kissing Gate … to burn like a flame … to get transformed in lightening in order to unite the sky with the earth.”

“Doesn’t its inner rhythm from one clepsydra to the next reveal the countless pulsations of the universes that ceaselessly expand and contract?” “I am no longer of this world; I am far from myself, separated from my own body. I find myself among essential things.” – Constantin Brancusi
